peat

Retracing seminal influences on my creative practice from childhood, namely: the ballets of Mats Ek and Angelin Preljocaj, Kiki Smith’s delicate drawings and sculptures, post-World War II Yugoslavian Spomenik monuments and the Mudmen of Papua New Guinea. The collection culminated in a short film shot with dancers from the Royal Ballet, Matthew Ball and David Donnelly, on location in Buckinghamshire. Composer Max Richter provided a score for the film, an excerpt from his 2002 album Memoryhouse.

27 carpets

A story of Western denim jeans traded for Persian silk rugs served as the starting point for this project, reflecting the bricolage between the old-world and the contemporary in Iranian shepherds. Glass and coral beads form an arrangement mimicking rug patternations, while dandelions screenprints adorn handwoven denim folded-crotch dungarees.

porcelain skin

A reimagination of the Hitchcock blonde as a contemporary male by breaking down the wardrobe elements used to create this image—spiral-stitched bras, matching suit sets and silk scarves. A checkered cardigan jacket and hourglass dress are complete with spiral-stitched embroideries, a printed silk lining and a blown glass scarf.

An ode to Naomi Campbell’s love affair with Vladislav Doronin, the house Zaha Hadid designed for them and the furnishings within. A cutout bodysuit is printed in scans from Corinne Day’s ‘Diary,’ a wooden belt replicates Carlo Mollino’s Arabesque Table and a glass and leather necklace is designed in the manner of shibari-knotted rocks.

parachute landing fall

An exercise in bridging the pantomimic body language of Pierrot with that of paratrooper training regimens. Ten metres of screenprinted nylon is pleated into the shape of cargo drop parachutes alongside hair resembling Jean-Gaspard Deburau’s depiction of Pierrot in a skullcap.

Lost and Found at OSO

February 29, 2020 in Exhibitions, Photography

I was so please to have my first solo show at OSO in Chinatown, Los Angeles. This show had prints of my work spanning 4 years, and it included hand dyed tapestries, hand stitched prints, and lots of wonderful people.

I was very fortunate to have the help of Savannah Shaw, Eileen Tai, and Axel Bizzari in the set up of this show. Thank you so very much—and a very special thank you to Julian Gross who owns OSO.

Always a big thank you to to eternal Nancy Riegelman.

spatial interventions

Anthropometry schematics, the chroma of skin human, and the extremes of the body in relation to interior spaces informed this design presented at Central Saint Martins’ annual White Show. Ultrasuede is lasercut to resemble skin grafting, hair tassels reference cilices worn by monks, a plastic corset is embroidered with an anthropometric diagram, and knitted bum-less knickers allude to the transgressive dance works of Michael Clark.

field dance

December 12, 2018 in Consulting, Styling

field dance

The start of an ongoing collaborative project with First Artist David Donnelly of the Royal Ballet, ‘field dance’ takes the form of movement studies informed by Robert Wilson’s masterwork ‘Einstein on the Beach.’ Nappa leather is lasercut in a technique akin to skin grafting, wool crepe is hand embroidered with an abstracted tongue designed by Nancy Riegelman, and merino wool armbands are knitted to resemble muscle fibres.

Katherine Helen Fisher says of performing Lucinda Childs’ choreography for the opera: “It’s challenging. It’s five and a half hours long. There are lots of clocks moving at differing rates, there’s a spaceship, a pipe, a glowing white cube.”

trichotomy

An exploration of the interplay between man and mechanism, primarily informed by Oskar Schlemmer's 1922 'Triadic Ballet.' Bauhaus furniture and tapestries were translated to shape and knitwear, and studies of breath created in collaboration with artist/illustrator Nancy Riegelman were rendered as hand embroideries.

the infinite possibility of configuration

the infinite possibility of configuration

Linearity having infinite possibilities of configuration was the starting point for this series. The knit pattern is generated from a random integer algorithm that uses atmospheric noise to build the sequence; it is rendered in primary colors as red, blue, and yellow can form infinite possibilities of colour.
